The law firm of Ruff, Weidenaar & Reidy, Ltd directly traces its roots back to 1936 when the founder of the firm, the late Attorney Stephen L. Ruff, Sr., opened his law office on Chicago's south side. His legal practice was interrupted in the early 1940s by full time military service during World War II. Upon his discharge from the military, he reopened his office with a location in the Chicago Loop. Mr. Ruff's legal practice focused on the representation of individuals, small corporations, financial institutions and health care providers. As the firm grew, it developed a trial practice involving the defense of tort claims including the defense of physicians and hospitals in medical malpractice claims. These areas of concentration have been, and now continue to be, characteristic of the firm's practice. During its long history, the firm has been known by several names. In 1981, with the guidance and support of its original founder, attorneys William B. Weidenaar, John J. Reidy and Stephen L. Ruff, Jr., our founder's son, partnered in the continuation of the firm's well-established practice. Under their leadership, the firm assumed it current name of Ruff, Weidenaar & Reidy, Ltd The firm's more than 70 years of existence makes it one of the oldest law firms in the City of Chicago.
