Kirby Ambulance is a service provided by John and Mary E. Kirby Hospital. Established in 1941, it is recognized by the Illinois Department of Public Health as an advanced life support service. It provides a 24-hour service and is staffed by licensed emergency medical technicians. It covers an area of more than 130-square-miles, serving over 11,000 residents. Kirby Ambulance has five units, including two paramedic transport units, two paramedic nontransport units, and an intermediate transport unit. Its parademic advanced unit provides advanced life support to adults, children and infants; and intermediate unit is used as a backup unit for transfers that do not require paramedic attention. Its paramedic nontransport units are used for ambulance assistance at a scene and advanced life support intercepts with other area ambulance services. These units also carry specialized rescue equipment for water rescue, ice rescue, ground search and low-angle rescue.
