The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post 20 in Aurora, IL, is a historic organization that was founded in 1866 as one of America's first veteran's organizations. With a membership of over 700 Civil War veterans representing 70 Illinois regiments, the GAR Memorial Hall was constructed in 1878 as a monument to Aurora's Civil War veterans and served as a meeting hall and the city's first free public library.
Designed in the Gothic Revival style by Aurora architect Joseph P. Mulvey, the GAR Memorial Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the membership of the GAR dwindled over the years, the GAR Memorial Association, consisting of descendants of Post 20, continues to preserve the legacy of the organization and the hall.
