History
From its humble beginnings in 1997 to present, Friend Family Health Center (FFHC) has been providing primary and preventive health care services to the vulnerable and medically underserved populations in the heart of Chicago's Southeast and Southwest sides. FFHC was started with the development of the Friend Family Foundation by Berman and Hannah Friend in the 1930s. Eventually, funding from the Michael Reese Health Trust allowed for building renovation to combine two of the University of Chicago's (U of C) clinical practices - the Woodlawn Infant Clinic and a clinic on the U of C campus at 55th Street. In 1998, FFHC became a federally qualified health center and soon after expanded its services to other Chicago communities. A significant number of the census tracts within its service area are designated as a Medically Underserved Area (MUA) and Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) characterized by insufficient numbers of all types of health care providers.
