Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District protects 30,000 people living in an area of 13 square miles outside of Chicago. Located in Darien, Ill., it operates out of three stations that protect a primarily residential area. DWFPD is a public department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status. The department was founded in 1952 as the Downers Grove Estates Fire Protection District and its first station was built in an unincorporated sub-division of Downers Grove, Ill., called Downers Grove Estates. It now provides service to half of Darien, parts of the Village of Woodridge, Ill., portions of the Village of Downers Grove, Ill., and areas of unincorporated DuPage County.
