With two locations in Oak Forest, Covenant Enabling Residence serves the population's developmentally disabled members. Covenant is a state-funded part of Covenant Ministries of Benevolence, which is an initiative of Swedish Covenant Hospital. As immediate care facilities for the developmentally disabled, the organization provides two facilties: Bjorklund House and Independence Place.
Covenant Enabling Residence was founded 17 years ago and is currently staffed by 30 full-time workers. Located at 15841 Terrace Dr., Bjorklund House has 16 residents. The second location, Independence Place located at 5700 Reynolds Ln., has eight residents. Residents range in age from 23 to 62 years old. Residency is contingent on a diagnosis of developmental disabilities prior to the candidate's 18th year.
All residents have jobs in sheltered workshops. The facilities also offer activities, trips and interactive experiences for all residents. Activities include trips to the zoo, dances, bowling, volleyball, soccer and a yearly trip to Lake Geneva.
