The Chicago Department of Law is responsible to provide legal counsel and representation services for the City of Chicago. The law department pursues lawsuits to protect city and its taxpayers. It works to litigate environmental lawsuits against businesses and individuals that cause public nuisances and hazardous sites. The Department of Law is governed by the City of Chicago, which additionally manages city services, animal care and control, aviation, budget and maintenance, building, finance, cultural affairs, fire and fleet management departments. The city also houses health, human relations, innovation and technology, water management, zoning, transportation, police, planning and development and revenue departments.
