The Bureau of Design and Environment, also known as BDE, is a part of the Division of Highways of the Illinois Department of Transportation, which is operated by the State of Illinois. The bureau is responsible for developing standards, specifications and policies for the state s highway system. It ensures safe and comfortable movement of the general public and goods in the state. The bureau provides support services for district highway design programs. It also coordinates and prepares federal-aided program documents. The Bureau of Design and Environment offers aerial surveying and photography services. The bureau operates environment and project development and implementation sections. The Bureau of Design and Environment manages and directs geological and special waste surveys.
