Established in 1921, the Illinois State Archives is an organization that serves as the depository of public records of the state and local government agencies that possess permanent administrative, legal and historical research values. It operates an administrative section that is responsible for general oversight of archives and budget, personnel and accounting services. The organization also maintains a publication section that publishes guides to state and local records holdings, prepares special finding aids for significant record series, develops teaching packages for educational institutions and issues newsletters. The Illinois State Archives additionally has micrographics, records management, restoration laboratory and regional archives depositories sections.
