The Idaho Air National Guard was established in 1946. The state s first unit was the 190th Fighter Squadron, which was called to active duty in 1950, the only full-scale mobilization in the Idaho Air Guard s history, to replace Air Force units in Korea. The Idaho Air National Guard has nearly 20 units, including an airlift squadron and a fighter squadron. The Air National Guard has been a part of United States history since the Revolutionary War. Today s Air National Guard is a separate reserve component of the U.S. Air Force. There are more than 140 Air Guard units throughout the U.S. and its territories. While missions vary from unit to unit, some interesting ones include pararescue missions, modular airborne firefighting support, combat communications and air traffic control.
