The Department of Parks and Recreation works for the city and county of Honolulu. It manages, maintains and operates parks and recreational facilities of the city. Additionally, it develops and implements programs for cultural and recreational activities and beautifies the public streets of the city. The department has more than 800 permanent employees and over 250 contract employees. It is responsible for more than 6,000 acres of park and recreation land. The department offers permits for using park facilities for sports tournaments, meetings, workshops, picnics, parking vehicles, playing loud music and conducting commercial activities. The Department of Parks and Recreation also offers camping sites for groups and families.
