Founded in 1954, Ala Wai School provides educational services to students in prekindergarten through grade five. The school s curriculum consists of several special programs, such as music, physical education, library skills, computer education, Japanese, Hawaiian studies and drug awareness. The school offers a counseling program that assists students in the process of growing physically, socially and educationally, it also helps them to solve their problems and to cope with crisis situations. The principal of the school works directly with parents, students, teachers, school personnel and community representatives to develop annual academic and financial plans. It also has a school community council that develops and reviews new school policies, focuses on student achievement, and participates in the evaluation and selection of the school's principal.
