Winder's public works department, under the direction of Ken Chalker, is comprised of a street division and a solid waste division. Its shares its headquarters with the water and gas departments.
The street division is responsible for maintaining safe, well-lit roads and parks, as well as collecting leaves, limbs, metal and household items for disposal. The solid waste division is responsible for the collection, disposal and recycling of waste materials for more than 4,000 homes and businesses. It handles almost 10,000 tons of solid waste, including 250 tons of recyclables materials, each year.
