We do not see our patients as addicts and neither should they. Their motivation to use substances is due to a genetically pre-disposed chemical imbalance in the brain that leads to self-medication as a means to alleviate troublesome symptoms. This is a medical condition that leads them to becoming dependent on a substance such as opiates (e.g. heroin, pain pills, etc.) or alcohol. The overall impact makes it nearly impossible for substance abusing individuals to make healthy choices about their life. Their struggle with co-existing illness like depression, PTSD or anxiety, further complicates long-term recovery. Research findings and decades of experience demonstrate that transforming the way the brain processes drug and alcohol stimuli provides the strongest way for patients to battle addiction. By first eliminating the cravings that frequently lead to relapse, our biological /psychological / social model helps patients create a personalized recovery plan that is far more permanent and more likely to succeed in the long term than traditional recovery programs.
