The Georgia Department of Transportation, also known as GDOT, offers planning and financial support services for mass transit facilities and airports. The department plans, constructs, maintains and improves road and bridges in Georgia. It also provides administrative support solutions to the Georgia Rail Passenger Authority. The Georgia Department of Transportation is responsible for waterways and rail transits. Its nonroad and construction projects are supported by the state, federal and local government funds. Established in 1972, the department manages a staff of more than 5,500 employees. It operates a field services division that is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the transportation system of department s districts. The Georgia Department of Transportation also manages procurement and information technology sections. Its districts cover Appling, Atkinson, Bacon and Baker counties in Georgia.
