The Georgia Department of Transportation works to provide an environmentally sound, multimodal transportation system and human and financial resources for individuals. It maintains a communication center that offers real time traffic and travel information. The department supports a state bicycle and pedestrian program that promotes and facilitates the increased use of nonmotorized modes of transportation and develops facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as administers public education, promotional and safety programs for using such facilities. The Georgia Department of Transportation additionally hosts various aviation programs that assure a safe, adequate and well-maintained system of airports, promotes and encourages the use of aviation facilities and maintains safer operating conditions at these facilities. It operates an office of contract administration that an integral part of the construction division that handles construction projects for transportation customers. The department is headquartered in Atlanta.
