History
As a young boy my grandfather Eng Kwang learned sculpture and ceramics. Powerful backs and firm rough hands shaped the enormous coils of wet clay into great vessels. Creamy ash glazes were generously slathered onto the vessels and dried when the rains permitted. Long dragon kilns that were dug into the hills were filled and piled with enough wood and pine needles to fuel a fire that lived for days. The temperature was controlled visually by controlling the color of the flame. In 1980 my grandfather opened the first AW Pottery in California. Vessels that were used in rural societies to store rice, water, oil, or soy sauce - common earthenware containers that were molded for utility, not art - were starting to become recognized in increasing amounts by both interior and landscape designer. An object has a use, and it might be designed in an artistic way, but we oftentimes separate these things. The rare union of usefulness and art is without doubt, beautiful.
