Atlanta Gas Light Company is one of the United States oldest utility companies, chartered on February 16, 1856, to provide nearly 50 gaslights for the streets of Atlanta. It also introduced gas for the use of cooking that same year. The company serves nearly 1.6 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in more than 240 communities throughout the state of Georgia. The company is one of the largest natural gas distribution utilities in the United States and one of the largest in the southeast region. In 1996, Atlanta Gas Light s parent company, AGL Resources, was established. In 2000, AGL Resources also acquired Virginia Natural Gas, which serves more than 230,000 customers in southeast Virginia. Atlanta Gas Light Company is headquartered in Atlanta.
