With its beginnings dating back to the Lewis School in Oxford, Mississippi in 1873, Delta Gamma has grown into a national organization with 146 chapters and over 190,000 members. The Delta Iota chapter at UGA was founded in 1968. A year later a newly constructed house on South Milledge was opened as the organization's residence. With a facade unique to sorority row, the Delta Gamma house was most recently renovated and updated in 2006. DG's philanthropy is "Service for Sight" which contributes to eye-related causes, although the sorority is active with many charitable organizations around campus and around town. In the fall, the sorority hosts a charity "Low Country Boil" for its foundation. In the spring the "Anchor Slam" is a charity 3-on-3 basketball tournament for its philanthropy and ugaHEROs, which benefits children affected by HIV. The women of Delta Gamma expound sisterhood and community service but also strive to promote the individuality and uniqueness of its members.
