UWMC traces its history locally back to its beginnings as the Community War Chest, founded in 1943 by the Kiwanis Club of Bradenton. It went through several incarnations before being renamed the United Way of Manatee County in 1980.
The land for its main office facility was donated by the Kiwanis Club in 1984. The group also operates an office in the McClure Center in Lakewood Ranch.
