Situated at the entrance to the Live Oak Preserve community, Hilda T. Turner Elementary opened its doors in 2005. The facility is named for the late and local educator/activist. Turner was prominently featured in a lawsuit against the Hillsborough County School District that won equal salaries for black school workers back in 1943.
Turner Elementary has earned a number of A ratings by the state. Additionally, it has been dubbed a Florida DOE Golden School and Five Star School. Its health program, “Put a Tiger in your Tank," put it on the national map when Energy Magazine named Turner the healthiest school in the entire U.S.
Turner educates about 880 students in kindergarten through fifth-grade. It features both before-school and after-school programs.
