The South Florida Water Management District is a regional government agency that provides flood control, water supply and environmental restoration services in more than 15 counties in Florida. It operates and maintains over 2,000 miles of canals and levees, and nearly 2,200 water control structures and pumping stations. The district manages and protects water resources for more than 7 million consumers in South Florida. The South Florida Water Management District is also involved in the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan project in the United States. The district restores floodplains along the Kissimmee River and revitalizes shoreline habitats. It offers planning, monitoring and security management services during emergency situations, such as flood, drought, wildfire and hurricanes. The South Florida Water Management District issues environmental resource permits.
