Seniors in Service trains and provides senior-aged volunteers to work with children and the elderly. Established as a not-for-profit corporation in 1984, the organization has seen its client base increase more than 400 percent and its programs triple, with services now extending into Hillsborough, Polk and Pinellas counties.
Volunteers can serve as foster grandparents, senior companions and caregivers. In addition, the organization offers a "Bill Payer" program designed to help elderly or disabled adults keep up with household financial affairs by assisting them with filling out paperwork, writing checks and balancing bank accounts.
Senior volunteers must commit to 20 hours of service each week. They also must be accepted through a formal enrollment process. Qualified volunteers receive a tax-free stipend, plus travel reimbursement.
Other community volunteers are recruited directly by the organization to help with the Bill Payer program or as caregivers. They serve at their convenience for a few hours each month.
