Sumter Electric Cooperative, commonly known as SECO Energy, founded in 1938, is one of the largest electric distribution cooperatives in the United States. The company serves homes and businesses in more than five counties of Central Florida. It owns and purchases power from Seminole Electric Cooperative. The company also offers emergency services for hurricanes, lightning and tornadoes. Sumter Electric Cooperative offers surge protection and radiant heat barrier systems. Its Load Management program is designed to reduce peak electric demand. The company is affiliated with the Florida Electric Cooperatives Association and National Rural Electric Cooperatives Association. It is a part of Touchstone Energy Cooperatives, which is a nationwide alliance made of more than 660 local, consumer-owned electric cooperatives in over 45 U.S. states. Sumter Electric Cooperative maintains a presence in Ocala, Fla.
