Sebastian is a principal city of the Sebastian–Vero Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Indian River County.
About ten thousand years ago, the Indian River Lagoon formed along the east central coast of Florida. The Ais people occupied the area that now contains the Pelican Island Wildlife refuge for thousands of years.
