Founded in 1971, Palm Lakes Elementary School serves more than 900 students in prekindergarten through fifth grade. Located in Hialeah, Fla., the school is part of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, which serves Miami-Dade County s more than 341,800 students in prekindergarten through grade 12 in a range of elementary, middle, high, charter, vocational, magnet and alternative schools, as well as special education centers. The public school district is one of the largest educational districts in the state. It is also the second largest minority public school system in the United States. The district s schools offer optional international study programs and bilingual education. Its specialized centers exist for students who have extreme mental and learning disabilities that impair them from attending classes with students with no such disabilities. Miami-Dade County Public Schools also owns and operates WLRN-TV and WLRN-FM.
