The ranch carefully selects breeding to maintain a heterozygous herd, resulting in a low percentage of inbreeding and no genetic disorders or abnormalities. With a genetic lineage closely related to the Garrano horses of Portugal, the Galicenos are considered the earliest Colonial Spanish Horses in the Americas. Their isolation in Southern Mexico, particularly the Yucatan, allowed them to develop as a landrace breed with minimal genetic exchange with other breeds. In the late 1950s, these Yucatan Ponies were brought into the United States, and the Galiceno Horse Breed was established.
