Florida Keys Electric Co-Operative provides electrical power services to a 75-mile-long service area that parallels US highway 1 through the upper portion of a narrow string of uniquely beautiful tropical islands that extend southwestward into the Atlantic from mainland Florida, also called the Florida Keys. The co-op serves more than 30,000 member-owners with two 138,000 volt transmission lines and 18,000 kilowatts of generating capacity. Power is distributed through 6 substations, and there are plans to add a seventh. The system's peak demand is for more than 134,000 kilowatts and annual sales are closing in on 680 million kilowatt-hours. FKEC purchases about 98 percent of its energy needs from Florida Power and Light. The Marathon plant supplies the other two percent. Membership to the co-op can be obtained through a five-dollar membership fee and having a meter installed in one s name. A nine-member Board of Directors, elected by the member-owners of the cooperative, oversees operations. Florida Keys Electric Co-Operative has been serving its members since 1940.
