FLORIDA TODAY realizes the important role volunteers, businesses and non-profit organizations play in our community. To recognize the countless hours and endless contributions those people and organizations make to our community everyday, we have established the FLORIDA TODAY Volunteer Recognition Awards. Each year, FLORIDA TODAY honors a citizen, volunteer, business and organization of the year. Winners of these four awards epitomize the spirit of volunteerism and have helped in some way to improve the welfare of our community. Established in 2001, BNDC has helped to implement solutions for the revitalization of low-income communities. BNDC is a faith-based grassroots group that channels the efforts of individuals---resident leaders, government officials, business people and church members---into the realization of peace and prosperity for all communities. Our efforts in the past have primarily focused in the Booker T. Washington neighborhood, Melbourne's poorest community and an area plagued by crime and drugs. Here, 85% of families have incomes of less than $15, 000 a year. The children in this neighborhood have many temptations and few places in which to play.
