When the Boynton Beach Police Department was started in 1920, the city had a population of 600, and the officers used bicycles as their primary mode of transportation. Today, Boynton Beach, Fla., is home to more than 50,000 people, and the department has grown to approximately 150 officers. Boynton Beach is divided into 10 patrol zones, which are staffed by motor vehicle patrol units and augmented by a series of specialized units. These units include traffic, community relations, bike patrol, tactical patrol, marine patrol, K-9, crime prevention, criminal investigations, intelligence and the SWAT team.
