Founded in 1906, the American Meat Institute, also known as A.M.I., is a national trade association that represents companies that process red meat and poultry products in the United States. The institute conducts scientific research programs through its foundation that is designed to help meat and poultry companies improve their plants and products. The American Meat Institute is governed by elected leaders and employs more than 30 staff members. It offers food safety inspections for meat packing plants. The institute uses ergonomic programs and safety equipment, as well as ensures compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act. The American Meat Institute also offers a variety of air, water and solid waste management services. It additionally operates an animal welfare committee.
