Established in 1938, the Greater Washington Urban League is a nonprofit, civil rights and social services organization that works to increase the economic and political empowerment of African-Americans the Washington metropolitan area. It administers various aging, educational, employment and training, and housing and economic development programs. With a professional staff of more than 100 employees in various disciplines, the organization serves over 60,000 individuals every year. The Greater Washington Urban League offers a variety of individual, corporate and religious membership options. It also operates a parent center that encourages parental involvement in children s education, as well as provides skills development classes for parents. The organization is a part of the National Urban League, which has nearly 100 affiliates. The Greater Washington Urban League maintains a presence in Washington, D.C.
