Frelinghuysen University, Former Classroom Building
Frelinghuysen University was a private historically Black university in Washington, D.C., open from 1906 to around 1960. Founded by activists Jesse and Rosetta Lawson, it offered evening and extension courses to African American students, focusing on providing service to the working poor by charging low tuition and holding classes in local homes and businesses. The university, named after Frederick T. Frelinghuysen for his support of African-American causes, provided educational and social services to the African-American community, including programs for those with limited literacy, a full high school curriculum, and undergraduate and graduate courses. Despite financial difficulties and loss of accreditation, it continued to serve until its closure in 1964.Generated from the website
