The Bureau of Consular Affairs is a part of the Department of State. It offers a range of passport services through its legal affairs division. The bureau s passport name check system assists in locating fugitives and prevents future passport issuance to them. The Bureau of Consular Affairs works to protect the lives and interests of citizens of the United States overseas and strengthens U.S. border security. The bureau supports more than 8,000 people working in over 200 embassies and consulates throughout the world. The Bureau of Consular Affairs additionally offers visa and overseas citizens services, including arrest, detention, robbery and death of U.S. citizens across the world.
