The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees is one of the largest public service employees unions in the United States. It is comprised of more than one million members that serve the public in all areas of government, health, education and other services, both public and private. The union organizes for social and economic justice in the workplace and through political action and legislative advocacy. AFSCME has more than 3,500 local unions in 46 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Each local chapter writes its own constitution, has regular membership meetings and elects its own officers and stewards. The union is headquartered in Washington, D.C.
