The Westport Police Department is comprised of 70 full time sworn police officers, 18 part-time special police officers, 39 traffic agents and 24 civilian employees. It is managed by Police Chief Alfred R. Fiore.
Police services include:
- A traffic enforcement unit, motorcycle and bicycle patrols and K-9 units
- The detective bureau consists of general investigation, burglary squad, youth services, Drug Abuse Resistance Education and Officer Friendly
- A Marine Division staffed throughout the boating season and a joint Police/Fire Dive Rescue Team.
- A public safety office, animal control officers, railroad services at both train stations and a Citizen’s Police Academy.
The Westport Volunteer Emergency Medical Services (WVEMS), is also part of the department. While all police officers are first responders and trained to either the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Medical Response Technician level, the department also relies on the expertise of six full-time Paramedics and EMTs as well as the 120 volunteers that volunteer in excess of 22,000 hours a year to the community. The public is invited to become part of the WVEMS organization. You can learn more by calling 203-341-6081, by visiting the organization's Web site.
The newest addition to the department is the Citizen’s Emergency Response Team or CERT as it is known nationally. There are 44 volunteer members in the organization who assist police and fire when resources are stretched to the limits. If you are interested in joining or learning more call 203-341-6039 or visit CERT's Web site.
The department is also the host agency for the Westport Police Athletic League (W.P.A.L.). W.PA.L. has over 75 volunteers that work with the youth of the community. The league sponsors many sports-related programs as well as social and scholarship programs.
