Created in May 1957, the VFW Post in Madison supports local veterans and runs community events. Membership is open to anyone who has served overseas and has a campaign ribbon. Area veterans, young and old, are welcome to join. There are about 130 veterans who are members. In addition, there is a ladies auxiliary group of about 30 members, consisting of spouses, sisters and mothers. If you'd like to become a member, you can call Post Commander Raymond Hanley, at 203-245-4372.
The Post sponsors numerous community events open to the public, including dinners on the third Friday of each month and breakfast on the last Sunday of most months. Notices of these events are often posted on the town green. The Post also sponsors fundraisers every year, including selling Anniversary Buddy Poppys and conducting car washes and bottle drives, with money raised going into the relief fund to support disabled veterans and their families. It also coordinates support with the state Veterans of Foreign War, which has additional resources to help veterans.
The VFW has a sunny, spacious hall with gleaming hardwood floors that can be rented out for different events. Parking is available in a lot next to the hall.
