A nonprofit agency, Stamford Emergency Medical Services provides pre-hospital emergency care and transport to the residents and guests of Stamford, Conn. SEMS offers pre-hospital emergency care to the community. All SEMS units are staffed by at least one Connecticut-licensed paramedic. The SEMS staff is comprised of trained career staff and volunteers who provide emergency medical care. Standby medical services include basic life support coverage and advanced life support. In the community outreach area, SEMS provides demonstrations to schools to educate youngsters about proper use of 911 and personal safety. To combat the tragedies caused by drunk driving accidents, SEMS partners with local police and fire departments to create a mock accident. In conjunction with several local agencies, SEMS arranges visits to senior buildings to discuss emergency preparedness with residents. Discussions include usage of 911, understanding paramedic-level care and what to do in case of an emergency. SEMS also performs blood pressure screenings.
