The Northern Correctional Institution in Somers is a level-five maximum security facility situated on a a 20-acre plot of land that is adjacent to the Osborn Correctional Institution. Northern was completed in January 1995 and received its first inmates in March 1995.
Northern is designed to manage inmates who have shown that they cannot adjust to confinement, posing a threat to the safety of the community, other inmates or staff. The facility provides a secure, structured and humane environment and affords inmates the opportunity to move back to less restrictive facilities through positive behavior and program participation.
Northern also houses the death row for the Department of Correction. These inmates were moved to Northern from Osborn in 1995.
