The Newtown Historical Society owns two structures in town: The Matthew Curtis Jr. House and the Middle Gate one-room schoolhouse. It also displays historical town treasures at the local library. The Newtown Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that relies on its membership and volunteers to maintain the properties and fund educational programs. Both properties are open for various re-enactment programs to show the newer generations of Newtowners how their predecessors lived. The society's goal is preservation and education.
