Kathleen Doherty-Peck, the director of the senior center and of social services for Montville, says the center serves more than 500 seniors every week.
The center offers free programs, transportation and activities for the seniors. Health programs and exercise classes include dance, pilates and yoga. Transportation to and from the center is available and free.
There is also transportation to the New London-Waterford area, to Norwich and around the town of Montville for shopping and other activities; on Fridays there's a program of special trips to new and different spots in the region. There's also a program to take seniors to medical appointments, locally or long-distance.
The center does lots of fund-raising and writes lots of grants and gets some money, as well, from the town.
Also available through the center are educational workshops, computer classes, food baskets and assistance with programs to help people with financial difficulties. These include rebates for renters, help with energy costs, food stamps, Medicare and more.
Help is also available for people with questions about managed care, living wills and similar issues.
