Middlesex United Way describes itself as a locally based organization dedicated to strengthening lives, helping people, and improving community conditions in the 15 towns in Middlesex County. It also has a volunteer center that organizes activities and matches volunteers with projects.

United Way programs aim to improve children's readiness to enter school, increase economic self-sufficiency of individuals and families, reduce risky behaviors among youth and adults and enhance the ability of individuals and families to attain affordable housing.

Ecumenical Food Bank

According to this organization's pamphlet, it's "not what we give, but what we share." Designed to help Naugatuck and Beacon Falls residents in need, the food bank provides temporary aid--and is not intended for long-term assistance. Area churches from all denominations are responsible for its operation and no paid staff is employed. Anyone interested in utilizing the food bank can be referred by a clergy person or a local social service agency. In 2009 alone, the food bank served 6,655 people offering nearly 60,000 meals to 420 families. Residents interested in volunteering can contact their local clergy. Those interested in donating can leave donations at one of the sponsor churches, contribute to community food drives or drop off during food bank hours. Nonperishable foods are needed, such as peanut butter, jelly, juice, canned vegetables and fruits, and pasta and sauce.

Brewster Chamber of Commerce

The Brewster Chamber of Commerce aims to meet the needs of its businesses, as well as work with community members in identifying different resources. It helps new businesses and non-profit agencies get settled and established (referring them to businesses which provide business cards, signs, insurance, etc.). Businesses and non-profit agencies that already exist and are members of the Chamber can also seek promotional assistance and other services.
