Calendar House
Located at the corner of Pleasant and Hobart Streets, across from the DePaolo Middle School, the Calendar House serves as a multi-purpose center of diverse activites, events and programs for senior citizens. It's simple to register for membership, which is free for Southingtin residents who are 55 or more. Members are able to renew friendships, connect with new friends, share interests and participate in a variety of classes to learn new skills and develop their hobbies. The facility includes three classrooms, a state-of-the-art computer lab, woodworking shop, library and lounge area, game room, Wii game, a conference room, a 50' x 60' multi-purpose main hall which serves as a cafeteria, gymnasium and venue for major events drawing large groups. Outdoors there's a picnic area, pavilion and space for outdoor activities as well, including a vegetable garden. The Calendar House also provides area residents an opportunity to take a variety of classes to improve their lives. In addition, it is the operations center for the town's Dial-A-Ride Bus Service, a program designed to provide rides to elderly and disabled residents as needed. Among the programs there are socials, lectures on topics of special interest to the elderly, such as health, fitness and health care with a variety of information of interest to seniors. The facility is run by a capable and caring professional staff with the assistance of many senior volunteers, all under the direction of Robert Verderame, Executive Director.
