This church on the hill was formed in 1844, when well-known minister and theologian Rev. David Dudley Field, whose sons became, respectively, a U.S. Supreme Court Justice (Stephen), creator of the Transatlantic Telegraph (Cyrus) and a noted jurist (David Jr.), left the Haddam Congregational Church with 135 members. HCC joined the United Church of Christ in 1961 as part of the Protestant ecumenical movement. Members volunteer their time and skills at many local charities, including the American Red Cross short-term shelter, Youth and Family Services of Haddam-Killingworth and Middletown's Eddy Shelter.
