The Gap opened in 1969 in San Francisco. Donald and Doris Fisher noticed that the youth were wearing jeans as a statement of the time (The Gap was short for "Generation Gap"), and Donald was also unable to find his size of Levi's in a department store. Put those two together and their idea was born. Originally, only Levi-Strauss jeans were sold here. Today The Gap carries a full line of clothing for men, women and children. Its latest trend is the Black Jean line.
