Southington is one of several Connecticut towns fortunate enough to host the Farmington Canal Trail, a Rails to Trails project designed to provide a recreational trail that extends from New Haven into Massachusetts. The town opened the first portion of the trail through downtown Plantsville and Southington a few years ago and began construction on the southern part of the trail, which extends from Plantsville to the Cheshire line. This second part is scheduled to officially open in 2011. The last part of the trail, which extends through a brownfield current being cleaned to the Plainville line, is scheduled to be built and completed in 2015.
