Founded in 1984, UNAVCO is a nonprofit, membership-governed association that supports and promotes Earth science by advancing high-precision techniques for the measurement and understanding of crustal deformation. Its Plate Boundary Observatory, which is a part of the EarthScope project and funded by the National Science Foundation, studies the three-dimensional strain field resulting from active plate boundary deformation in the West. The organization sponsors educational workshops and short course series on several topics, including explore plate tectonics, using EarthScope data in the classroom and geophysical information for teachers. It employs more than 80 people and has offices in Salt Lake City; Anchorage, Alaska; Ellensburg, Wash.; and Richmond and Riverside, Calif. UNAVCO is headquartered in Boulder, Colo.
