Faith Evangelical Free Church began in October 1984 as a Bible Study. It was launched by the EFC Rocky Mountain District to reach families in the growing Briargate section of Colorado Springs, and was led by John Hedlund. By September 1985 the Bible Study had grown, so the group called its first pastor, Dr. Richard Troup, rented meeting space on North Union Blvd., and officially organized as Northeast EFC. Dr. Troup's wife had serious medical problems and he resigned in June 1986. Mr. Forest Pierce, a member of Northeast EFC, volunteered to serve as interim pastor until a full time pastor could be called. Mr. Pierce served for an entire year until the congregation called Mr. Scott Carlson, a recent seminary graduate, to become pastor in July 1987. In September 1989 the cost of rented office space for Sunday School on North Union increased, so the church moved to Timberview Middle School. Northeast EFC continued to meet at Timberview for two years. In 1991 another small church, Northgate Bible Church, which was meeting at Rampart High School, lost its pastor. After several joint services in July and August 1991, the two churches merged and formed Faith EFC. Mr. Carlson continued as pastor, and the church held its services at Rampart High School. In the summer of 1992, after seven years of meeting in rented offices and schools, the Lord blessed Faith EFC with the opportunity to purchase an existing church building at 6065 Oakwood Blvd. The sale was finalized and Faith EFC begain services in its new building in September 1992. Mr Carlson resigned as pastor in April 1993. The church then called Mr. Sam Goertz to serve as pastor and he was installed in October 1993. Pastor Sam and Andrea served at Faith until August 2008 when they accepted the call to pastor a church in Montvale, NJ. During their close to 15 years at Faith the congregation nearly tripled in size from an average attendance of 50 to 130. The goal of 25% of the church budget going to missions was realized. The second staff member, a part-time church secretary, was added in April 1999 and the church hired a part-time custodian in January 2004. The original note on the property was paid-in-full, the church property was annexed into the City of Colorado Springs and the first phase of developing the property was successful, resulting in new sanctuary, kitchen and nursery rooms that were dedicated in March 2004. God blessed the congregation with unity throughout these times. In May 2007 the church made a change from a council-led form of government to being elder-led. A call was extended to Rev. Gordon Wood of Ellison Bay, Wisconsin where he pastored in Bethel Baptist Church for over 13 years. He accepted that call, and moved to Colorado Springs the middle of May, 2009. Rev. Wood is a graduate of Prairie Bible Institute of Three Hills, Alberta, Canada and of Denver Seminary in Denver, Colorado. His first Sunday with us was May 24, 2009. He is married to Heather and their children are Nate and Natalie, both in elementary school. The church had an associate pastor in the person of an Army chaplain-in-training. This training has been completed and he was recently deployed.
