Among professional football teams, the Denver Broncos Football Club stands a mile higher literally. A charter member of the American Football League, it is now the National Football League s Denver-based franchise. The team played in the AFL s first game against the New England Patriots in 1960 and was the first AFL team to defeat an NFL team the Detroit Lions in 1967. In 1970 the Broncos, along with the nine other AFL teams, joined the NFL. The team has since appeared in six Super Bowls and won two in 1998 and 1999. It has also inducted one player quarterback John Elway into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Broncos organization is based in Englewood, Colo., but plays its home games at the 76,000-seat INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver, approximately 1 mile above sea level.
