A Prussian count built the Broadmoor Hotel in 1891 as a gambling casino with a small hotel. It was purchased by the Winfield Scott Statton Estate in 1897 and converted into a boarding house and day school for girls. Spencer Penrose purchased the facility and 400 adjoining acres in 1916 and opened the Broadmoor Hotel as a resort in 1918. The resort has six different room options, a spa, three golf courses, a fitness center, two swimming pools (one indoor and one outdoor) and a variety of restaurants, cafes and lounges. The Broadmoor Hotel also offers babysitting services and a day camp for children ages three to 12 years. The resort has received both Five-Star and Five Diamond ratings. The Broadmoor Hotel built an alternative route to Pike s Peak and sponsored the first auto race to the summit, The Pike s Peak Hill Climb.
